Costa Ártabra, a winter landscape waiting to be discovered

Winter reveals a more intimate side of northern Galicia. In the province of A Coruña, the Costa Ártabra shows itself in all its splendor: changing skies, the breaking waves of the Atlantic, and landscapes that invite you to pause and reflect. It is the ideal time to discover this coastline in a calm atmosphere, accompanied by seasonal cuisine and the natural beauty that characterizes it.

At Carrís Hotels, we suggest exploring this privileged stretch of the Galician coastline, which is especially convenient for those staying in A Coruña and looking to unwind. Here are some of our essential stops.

Ortigueira

Strolling through the streets of Ortigueira is to delve into the history of the region, from archaeological remains and megalithic ruins, such as the Forno dos Mouros dolmen, to its medieval heritage. The Convent of Santo Domingo and O Casón Castle, overlooking the coast, are part of a visit that is completed by the historic center, the Isabel II Market, and the modernist architecture that defines the town center.

The natural environment completes the experience. If you are more of a beach person, a walk by the sea along Morouzos beach, with its white sand and dune system, or along A Concha beach could be included in your itinerary. If, on the other hand, you prefer a break surrounded by greenery, visit the Malecón Gardens, on the banks of the estuary.

Herbeira Cliffs

At 615 meters high, the Herbeira Cliffs are the highest in continental Europe. From the Garita de Herbeira viewpoint, the landscape opens up to an impressive panorama where the waves of the Atlantic merge with those of the Cantabrian Sea.

Access by car is easy via the DP-2205 towards Vixía de Herbeira, although those who prefer a more active experience can opt for the Ruta dos Cantís de Cariño, a route of approximately three hours (one way) through the A Capelada mountain range. From different points along the trail, it is possible to contemplate, from above, the unique Teixidelo Beach, an isolated cove that appears unexpectedly between the verticality of the landscape and stands out for its volcanic black tones.

A Carrís tip: choose days without fog to fully enjoy views that will surprise you.

Cabo Ortegal

Cabo Ortegal is one of the most unique enclaves on the Galician coast. Popular for its geological significance and for being one of the northernmost points of the Iberian Peninsula, this cape is home to the iconic red and white striped lighthouse in the municipality of Cariño.

From this point, the sea offers a constant spectacle, especially at sunset. The area is also renowned for the quality of its barnacles and its importance as a migratory bird passage, making it a particularly attractive spot for nature lovers.

Nature, tranquility, and the Atlantic in its purest form. Are you coming?
