Que-ver-en-un-fin-de-semana-en-Ourense

Previously, we told you that Ourense is the perfect destination if you are looking for a getaway with presence of thermal waters, since the considered “thermal capital” stands out for its numerous springs, pools and natural pools.

But, what can you see in Ourense beyond its thermalism? We tell you!

Plaza Mayor

One of the first stops on your visit to Ourense should be the Plaza Mayor, an emblematic place that is not only the heart of the city, but also houses the Ourense City Hall.

This square is surrounded by noble buildings, some of them with medieval charm, which will transport you back in time. Here you can enjoy a vibrant atmosphere, especially during the evenings, when the terraces of the cafes are full of life.

Take the opportunity to stop for a coffee or a Galician wine and watch the hustle and bustle of the city.

Church of Santa María Madre

Another of Ourense’s must-sees is the Church of Santa María Madre, one of the architectural jewels of the city.

Its baroque facade is one of the most spectacular in Galicia, with ornamental details that make it stand out. Inside, the church is no slouch: two imposing wooden altarpieces accompany the main altar, where the image of Santa María Madre is located.

In addition, the sculpture of the Piedad, from 1775, offers a glimpse of the religious devotion of the time. It is an ideal place of peace for those seeking a moment of tranquility.

Plaza del Trigo

In front of the south facade of the Cathedral of Ourense, is the Plaza del Trigo, another corner with a lot of history. This square was, in times past, the meeting place of merchants who sold ceramics, silverware and cereals.

In the center of the square, the New Fountain stands out, one of the oldest in the city, surrounded by arcades that invite you to take a stroll.

The quiet atmosphere of the Plaza del Trigo contrasts with the activity in the main streets, making it a perfect place to relax and enjoy the historic architecture that surrounds it.

Cathedral of Ourense

After exploring the Plaza del Trigo, you cannot miss a visit to the imposing Cathedral of Ourense, also known as the Cathedral of San Martiño.

This temple, which dates back to the 12th and 13th centuries, has witnessed multiple extensions and renovations over the centuries. Its architecture combines Romanesque and Gothic styles, highlighting the late Gothic dome that crowns the building.

The cathedral houses several elements of great historical and artistic value, such as the Romanesque Christ, the Main Chapel and the Portico of Paradise. If you are interested in museums, the Cathedral Museum inside the building offers an impressive collection of religious art.

Mirador de Ourense

If you are a lover of panoramic views, you can not miss the Mirador de Ourense. From this high point, located behind the Cathedral, you can enjoy spectacular views of the old part of the city and, in particular, of the cathedral, with its reddish roofs.

Access is by stairs that go up through the Plaza del Corregidor, and the effort will be worth it to see the beauty of the city from the top.

If you like photography, from here you can take some spectacular pictures.

Cloister of San Francisco

This cloister belongs to what was a former Franciscan convent from the 14th century and stands out for its preservation. The 63 stone arches, resting on double columns, are decorated with details of animal and human motifs.

A perfect place to lose yourself in the tranquility and beauty of its surroundings.

Eironciño dos Cabaleiros

If you are looking to relax with a drink after a walk around the city, choose the Eironciño dos Cabaleiros Square, also known as Cid Square.

It was the old aristocratic quarter of the city, and was a meeting point for many Galician artists and intellectuals of the twentieth century.

The Casa de María Andrea, with its 16th century wooden balcony, is one of the most outstanding architectural elements of the square.

Roman Bridge

What better plan than a sunset stroll along the banks of the Miño with a view of the Roman Bridge?

This construction, dating from the 1st century AD, is one of the oldest in Ourense and a testimony to its rich history. Despite the reconstructions suffered in the thirteenth and seventeenth centuries, it retains seven of the eleven original arches and remains one of the few steps to save the Miño River.

The bridge offers breathtaking views of the river and the city.

Other must-see destinations in the province of Ourense

If your stay in Ourense is longer, and you are encouraged to explore beyond the city, the province has a lot to offer. Destinations such as Allariz, a charming medieval village; Ribadavia, famous for its old town and Ribeiro wine; and the Ribeira Sacra, with its impressive canyons and monasteries, are essential stops on any itinerary.

Ribeira-Sacra

You know, Ourense will not only surprise you with its hot springs, but will also invite you to explore its history, architecture and culture.
