These are the best street markets in Oporto

Estos son los mejores mercadillos de Oporto

Porto is a city full of life and fascinating places that we talked about before. And, not surprisingly, it is also a paradise for flea market lovers. These places offer a wide variety of items, from antiques to second-hand objects, and encourage local commerce. So that you can take home a unique souvenir of your visit, we have made this list of the best flea markets in Porto.

Before you start, you should know that most of them are open on weekends, Saturdays and Sundays, so you can organize your tour and not find any unpleasant surprises.

Feira da Vandoma

This fair was born in the mid-seventies with the aim of creating a space in which to sell books used by students. However, now the Feira da Vandoma has become the most famous flea market in the whole city.

It is held every Saturday morning, from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., on Avenida 25 de Abril. It specializes in the sale of used objects, such as clothes, furniture, toys, household appliances… It is ideal if you love antiques and want to hunt for something unique that tells a story from the past.

Feira da Vandoma is a must on this trip. We recommend you go early in the morning to explore it calmly and make sure you can find the best pieces.

Mercado de Bolhão

Mercado de Bolhão is a classic market in Porto, as we have already told you in a previous article. It is located in one of the most beautiful neighborhoods of the city, on Rua Formosa, and is more than a century old, so it is not surprising that it is considered a Heritage Asset and a Monument of Public Interest.

It has a metallic structure divided into two floors reminiscent of neoclassical architecture. It has a large number of different stalls where you can buy a wide variety of local products, such as flowers, vegetables, meat, fish, sweets and even souvenirs.

This market is open from Monday to Saturday, from 8:00 to 00:00 hours, so you can visit it whenever it suits you best.

Porto Belo Market

This place is inspired by the well-known Portobello Market in London’s Notting Hill. In it, art, design and local culture converge. It is held every Saturday at Praça Carlos Alberto, one of the most beautiful in the city, from 10:00 am to 7:00 pm.

Porto Belo Market specializes in the sale of artistic creations by local artisans, such as clothing, jewelry, records, illustrations or organic products. The average price is higher than in other markets, but it makes up for it with the originality of the objects it hosts.

In addition, one Saturday of each month celebrates the Mini Portobelo, an edition aimed at the smallest of the house in which they can sell or exchange their toys. It takes place from 2:00 pm to 6:30 pm.

Feira dos Passarinhos

Next on the list is a very special fair that you should visit at least once on your trip. This is the Feira dos Passarinhos, which, as the name suggests, hosts stalls selling all kinds of domestic birds, from parakeets and cockatiels to roosters and hens. It also offers articles for their care and breeding.

It is held in Alameda das Fontainhas, every Sunday from 7:00 am to 1:00 pm. It is a very curious flea market with a long history in the Portuguese city.

Tips for beginners

You already know the main street markets in the city. But, in order to have a complete and unbeatable experience, you should take into account these recommendations:

  • Always carry cash. Some vendors accept payment by credit card, but usually they do not give you this option.
  • Go early. If you want to avoid the crowds and find the best bargains, it is best to arrive as soon as the doors open.
  • Haggle politely. At many fairs, bargaining is a common practice, but do it with respect.
  • Stroll calmly, don’t rush from stall to stall. Most of these markets have a special cultural atmosphere. Therefore, you should take time to enjoy your surroundings and take your shopping with philosophy.

Rest in an ideal hotel

After a long day of strolling through the markets and touring the city, you will most likely end up exhausted. That’s why you should make sure you have a comfortable and cozy accommodation where you can relax after your adventure through Porto’s fairs.
